
H2FlowTrace reaffirmed its role as an innovative project in hydrogen flow traceability at the 20th International Flow Measurement Conference in Nara, Japan. During the conference, the project partners presented three conference abstracts, allowing us to showcase our progress to world-leading experts in flow metrology.
Rémy Maury, CEO of Cesame-Exadébit, presented “Achieving traceability in hydrogen flow metrology: from small-scale applications to the gas network – paving the way with a multiple bootstrapping method”. He highlighted how the project has calibrated 2 sets of Critical Flow Venturi Nozzles to be implemented on a Small-Scale Transfer Skid (SSTS) and ensure SI traceability for master meter calibrations.
Menne Schakel, Chief Scientist Flow at the National Metrological Institute of the Netherlands (VSL), explained how the results obtained at the SSTS were upscaled to a Large-Scale Transfer Skid (LSTS), presenting: “Upscaling hydrogen gas flow SI-traceability to the European hydrogen backbone”. He explained how the assembly of the LSTS will deliver traceability for hydrogen and hydrogen blends (HENG), enabling an eventual European hydrogen backbone.

The project completed its contribution to FLOMEKO 2026 with a presentation by Marc MacDonald, Head of Hydrogen Metrology at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory: “Evaluation of Domestic and Industrial Gas Meters for Hydrogen Gas Networks”. The calibration testing program for hydrogen, HENG, and alternative fluids was unveiled, which will be conducted this summer on around 50 residential and industrial meters. The results will enable gas network operators to select the most suitable meter types for hydrogen networks and determine how these meters should be calibrated, to promote the use of hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels.
